Dan's Story

Dan Martin, a former Metropolitan Police homicide detective sergeant, suffered a life-altering stroke in 2021 at just 39 years old after contracting Covid-19 while serving on the frontline. Despite being fit and healthy, he was left paralysed on his left side, blind in his right eye, cognitively impaired, and requiring daily care. Against all odds, Dan relearned to walk and speak, and in August 2024 received his 20-year service award at Scotland Yard—walking unaided.

However, his recovery is far from complete. Medically retired, Dan receives a pension that covers basic living expenses but disqualifies him from funded daily care or advanced treatment. The NHS does not provide many of the specialist therapies that could help him regain further independence. These include osteopathy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, pain relief, and advanced visual retraining therapies.

Dan's work as a detective exposed him to traumatic and complex investigations, and his commitment to public service never wavered. Even now, he volunteers as a stroke mentor to help others facing similar challenges. With further support, he hopes to regain more functionality and reduce his reliance on care, allowing him to serve society in new ways.

Our Story

Dan visited our school on several occasions before and since his injury.  He was an inspiration each time.

The Three Peaks in 24 hours is a challenge that many people undertake each year.  But it is not trivial – it's a challenge for a reason.  We are going to test ourselves to the limit to complete the challenge and as a team.

What could possibly inspire us to complete?

Dan's injury and his perseverance to recover despite all the odds is both apt and an inspiration for us to see through this challenge.

We said all this 364 days ago, when we first attempted the Three Peaks in 2025.  Unfortunately, during that attempt, our support vehicle broke down after a highly commendable less-than-five-hours climbing and descending Ben Nevis.  We had no choice but to seek shelter from vicious rainfall in the last rooms in Fort William.
